If you’re running a small website, you may want to learn how you can beat well-known established brands in the search results of your field. As Google’s software engineer Matt Cutts revealed in a recent webmaster help video, it’s not as hard as it may sound. Cutts says, that larger sites do not automatically rank higher in Google.
Smaller pages are more agile and able to update faster than their large competitors. Websites, which are smart enough to be dynamic, have a fast response time and publish new ideas from time to time, can easily rank higher in Google’s search results. According to Cutts, this has been witnessed regularly: “It’s not the case that the smaller sites with superior content can’t outdo the larger sites. That’s how the smaller sites often become the larger sites.”
Slowly climb up the search results
He adds several examples of small sites which outran their competitors in the past. Facebook used to be very small and overtook Myspace not long ago. Pages like Pinterest and Instagram started out tiny as well. Cutts states, that they’re doing a better job when it comes to focusing on user experience. They’re adding more value to the site:
“If it’s a research report organization, the reports are often higher-quality, more insightful, or delve deeper into issues. If it’s an analytical focus, the analysis is generally more robust. Whatever area you are in, if you’re doing it better than the other incumbents, then over time you can expect to perform better”, he explains.
Cutts also offers some advise for solo webmasters, who can’t rely on a huge team to support them: “Focus on a small subject and cover it really, really well”, he suggests. From there, you can build out of that niche until you get larger and larger. You should stick to your area, become an expert on that matter, and soon you’ll be recognized as being the main source for it. When you’re ahead of one niche, you can focus on the next one.
