21, 20, 19, 18…….only a few more days and then something is going to happen that may change your life forever!
That may be a bit dramatic but on the 21st April 2015 Google is releasing a new update and that could quite easily cause a lot of drama for anyone out there who owns or manages a website.
What is it all about?
Well, quite simply put, Google is looking at your website to see if it is mobile responsive, or mobile friendly, however you prefer to say it. For those websites that are mobile responsive Google will favour those websites in mobile search results.
How does that affect you?
If you do a search for any search term from a mobile device, the results that appear at the top will be from mobile responsive websites. If you site is not mobile responsive then Google will be pulling you down in the rankings.
Now, that is significant!
Why do you care?
Before reading any further just go and open up your Google Analytics dashboard.
Is it open? Right, now click on the Audience section and then click on the “mobile” link.
What you have here is a break down of how much traffic to your website comes from a desktop, tablet or mobile device. So, if you have a look at the amount of traffic coming from mobile or tablet then you have an idea of how important this update is.
What you can also do is have a look at the historical data to see how much the mobile traffic has increased over the last 12 or 24 months.
I am guessing you are a little more focused now on what I am writing!
What’s that Mobile Responsive URL all about?
When I said we have an important URL I meant it.
The way to tell if your website is mobile responsive is to go and check out the cool tool that Google developed for us. Just open up the link below, copy in the URL for your website and click “analyze”.
Voila……there you have it.
OK, that is the good version. If you have something that tells you that you are not mobile responsive then you need to start thinking about what to do .
Mobile Responsive Websites – The Options
You have determined that your website is not mobile responsive, what next?
The first question is to ask yourself whether you need a mobile responsive website. Ask yourself this one question…..
Do I have traffic coming to my website from mobile devices that I am happy to lose?
– If the answer is no then you need a mobile responsive website?
– If the answer is yes – congratulations, you just saved yourself some time and money.
If you are like the majority of people then you will not want to lose traffic coming to your site. Traffic is potential clients and we can all do with the revenue that those clients bring to our businesses.
The options now narrow considerably. You need a mobile responsive site and you will need it soon.
Calculating the hit
Let’s say you choose to wait and see what happens, how will you check what is going on?
This update is ever so new and so the tools that we have our going to find it hard to keep pace with this update. What you will notice, from the word go, lives in Google Analytics.
If the mobile responsive update has a negative effect on your web rankings then it would make sense to see a drop in traffic coming through mobile channels. This is something you will be able to see very soon after the update. I am going to be keeping an eye on our clients traffic to see how that works, some of them are already mobile responsive whilst others are not yet ready.
It is going to be an interesting time for all of us!

The first step is to get a website developer to have a look at your current setup. We are finding that most people need to have their site engineered again, however, it is hard to say without looking closely at the current website.
You need to move quickly to get your website ready otherwise your delay could result in large revenue losses.
