How to Blend Photos in Photoshop?
Photoshop has a feature called “layer mask” that can blend two or more pictures nicely. Here we will show you the technique to blend pictures using that feature:
1. Choose the pictures that you want to blend
It will be easier to blend two pictures with similar colors because we can directly blend it without adjusting the color of each other. But finding two pictures that has similar colors is not always easy.
So when you want to blend two pictures that don’t have matched color, that’s not a problem, because in the end we can adjust the color in Photoshop, so it will match together.
In this tutorial, we will use a wedding picture and a family picture.
2. Create a New Document and Drag the Pictures into the Blank Document
First of all, we need to create a new blank canvas or new blank document. You can do that by clicking “File — New” or “Ctrl + N”. You can choose the size of the canvas in the new document form.
After that, open the pictures that you want to blend on Photoshop by clicking “File — Open” then selecting the pictures.
The next step that you need to do, is dragging the pictures that you want to blend to the blank canvas. You can use the “Move Tool” in the tools palette to drag the pictures, or press letter “V” on the keyboard. With the “move tools” selected, just click inside the picture and drag it to the blank document.
For example, here I click inside the wedding picture and drag it to the blank canvas. Then I do the same thing to the second picture.
3. Adjust the Size and Position of Images as Needed
You can drag the images and adjust their position by using the “move tool” like what we do in the second step.
In order to resize the image, you can use “Free Transform command” by clicking “Edit — Free Transform”. As the alternative way, you can also press “Ctrl + T” to use the Free Transform command.
Here we place two pictures in the portrait position, and we place the wedding pictures on top of the family pictures.
After you’re happy with the size and the position of the images, press “Enter” to stop the Free Transform command.
4. Add Layer Mask
In order to blend two pictures together, we need to use the “Layer Mask”.
Go to the “layers palette” and click the pictures that is on the top (in this case, the wedding picture). After that, click “Add Layer Mask button” at the bottom of the layers windows or the layers palette.
5. Use Black to White Gradient to Blend The Images
Select the “Gradient Tool” at the tools palette, or press “G” on your keyboard as a shortcut to select the Gradient Tool. At the option bar (in the top section), we can choose the gradient color and the gradient model.
Just make sure you choose the black and white color.
Now go back to the document, and drag out the gradient tools into the top image (in this case, the wedding picture).
6. Save the Picture with .jpg or .jpeg extension
After doing all the steps above, you can see the result of the blended photos. the last thing that you need to do, is saving the document.
In order to save the document, click “file — save”, then name the file as you want. Don’t forget to change the file extension from Photoshop format (*.PSD;*.PDD) into JPEG format (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE).
If you don’t change the file extension, then the file cannot be opened in other programs except Photoshop.
